Mehdi Hassan also known as “Shahensha-e-Ghazal (King of Ghazals)” was a renowned Pakistani ghazal singer who proved his mettle not only in Pakistan, but globally. Born in 1927, Mehdi Hassan started his musical career from RadioPakistan in 1957 and ever since that ruled the musical fraternity. Hailing from a family of classical musicians Mehdi Hassan had musical talent in his genes. However, it is an established fact by now that no one in sixteen generations on his family was as gifted as Ustad Mehdi Hassan Khan. Hehad a unique passion for Urdupoetry that he translated by using famous and infamous Urdu ghazals in his songs.

 

Mehdi Hassan also lent his voice as a playback singer for Pakistani movies and before his retirement had atleast 25 albums and hundreds of ghazals on his record. Mehdi Hassan has been awarded with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Nishan-e-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance by Pakistanigovernment. He has also been conferred with K. L. Saigal Sangeet Shehenshah Award and Gorkha Dakshina Bahu award by Indian and Nepalese government respectively.

 

Prominent musicians like Lata Mangeshkar associated his voice to the “voice of god”. Similarly, another seasoned ghazal singer- Jagjit Singh respected him as his “spiritual teacher”. Mehdi Hassan is a treat for everyone music lover.
